How To Manage And Treat Seasonal Allergy Symptoms |
|
|
At specific times in the year, a set of people prone to allergies find themselves sneezing, coughing, having watery eyes and feeling awful. The symptoms are sometimes not severe enough to warrant treatment. The initial reaction of the sufferer is to feel that he is heading for a flu or illness. Gradually, they begin to dread that time of the year approaching, since that is one time in the year that they feel most unwell. The reason-they suffer from seasonal allergies. Though some people complain of similar symptoms all the year round, spring and fall are two seasons when they are at their worst. The thought uppermost in the minds of such people is to somehow get respite from these symptoms of seasonal allergies, and learn to manage them. For this, it is essential to know what really triggers off the allergic spell. The effect is what we feel-a runny or stuffy nose, endless bouts of coughing, chest congestion, wheezing and so on; but the cause has to be searched for. Spring and fall season sufferers are likely to be adversely affected by pollen, ragweed and mold, which is not just found inside, but quite prevalent outdoors after rainfall. Mold, indoors, can be effectively controlled by using air purifiers, but nothing can be done about it in the open. Seasonal allergies require proper treatment using natural remedies or medication. Many patients suffering from similar symptoms, year after year, are able to evolve natural ways of preventing the symptoms from aggravating. There are others who start treatment before these seasons set in. However people suffering from pain and severe discomfort resort to medication bought over-the-counter or after consulting a doctor. A doctor's advice is always preferable especially in the case of severe allergies, as he is able to determine which treatment would be most suitable after analyzing a series of factors like family history, sensitivity to certain foods and drugs, symptoms, side effects of drugs, other medical problems that the patient is suffering from, and so on. However, doctor consultations can be expensive and even more so if prolonged intake of medication is recommended. Caution is of utmost importance while opting for self-medication without the doctor's advice. Over-the-counter drugs are of various kinds and it is difficult to decide which one to take. The advice of the pharmacist is beneficial, as he would know the working of the chemical contained in the drug and when it is most effective. A combination of over-the-counter medicines can be dangerous as the layman has no way knowing if the two chemical components react with each other. Drugs tested by known people are a safer bet. Alternatively, it is preferable to surf online for possible remedies and study the details about effectiveness, possible side-effects, risk factors and so on. People suffering from seasonal allergies can also take simple preventive steps. It is said that being forewarned, is being forearmed. In this age of information technology, we have access to detailed information like weather forecasts on the Weather Channel, and analysis of pollen counts in the air besides live broadcasts. Pollen is one of the most common allergy provoking components in the air during spring and fall. When it is found that pollen levels are high people can stay indoors or wear protective masks. Even indoors, pets must be checked as long haired cats and dogs have lots of pollen stuck in their hair when they step out. This naturally finds its way into the home and the patient finds his condition getting worse. Hence it is essential to control the pollen level indoors as well. |
